Dorothy FireCloud

Dorothy is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota. Her formal education consists of an Associate of Science; Bachelor of Science; and a Juris Doctorate from New Mexico School of Law. She has been a member of the New Mexico State Bar since 1991. Her interests lie in the field of Indian law. During law school she worked as a law clerk with the Department of Justice, US Attorneys office, where her duties focused on Indian water rights. She joined the Federal government in 1992 as a Water Rights Specialist, in the Bureau of Indian Affairs' Phoenix Area Office. From 1996 to 1998, she worked for the Pueblo of Zuni, through an IPA, developing their water rights program. From May to August 1998, she was the Administrative Officer at the Hopi Agency, Keams Canyon, Arizona. She transferred to the Forest Service in August 1998 in the Southwestern Region (Arizona and New Mexico), Albuquerque, New Mexico as their Regional Tribal Relations Program Manager. She recently completed an assignment as Team Leader of the National Implementation Team on Tribal Relations. The Team developed an extensive report and new Forest Service manual and handbook on Tribal relations to better fulfill the agency's trust responsibilities to Indian tribes. She most recently completed an assignment as the acting District Ranger in Hoonah, Alaska.
