| Doctrine of Discovery | Certain doctrines have been threatening to the survival of indigenous cultures, languages, and peoples, and devastating to traditional, indigenous ways of life. These doctrines are found in particular colonizing documents such as the Inter Cetera papal bull of 1493, which called for the subjugation of non-Christian nations and peoples and “the propagation of the Christian empire.” This is the root of the Doctrine of Christian Discovery that is still interwoven into laws and policies today. Come learn about how understanding the Doctrine of Christian Discovery is the first step toward ‘Brightening the Covenant Chain’ of peace and friendship the US agreed to pursuant to treaties with the Indian Nations in the US.
